I woke up in a great mood, a little later than usual but feel fantastic. Got my shower, got rocky walked then went to the garden with basket in hand and fertilizer to be used.
I bought the same one as last time because it has the best numbers for what I need and it's affordable. I worked hard out there, mostly bending down or scraping the weedlings away.
Despite the soil still being damp I was not going to take a chance and have the new seedlings wilt in the heat. Look at those potatoes though! Wow they really are busting out of those holes and now am going to need to fill in those with soil. They've almost cleared the top of the holes so have to go buy some potting soil or cactus mix to fill in. And the support cages they will be needing.
That one pea already has a tendril out! I need to get moving on the trellis for those too! Two stakes and some netting for them thankfully is all they need. I sprinkled fertilizer liberally everywhere using about half of what I had in the bag.
But first I loosened the soil everywhere I could trying hard not to knock down any of the desirable seedlings. Only hit one small pea in that bed thankfully and didn't get all the dirt moved around.
Much work was done, I didn't put any food in the holes for the potatoes just in the soil around them because that will be growing area for something else soon. Not sure what but gotta be prepared.
Then came the watering. I flooded it all because even with 'thorough' watering there were clumps of dirt that hadn't gotten wet and fertilizer was not getting moved around
Getting too old for bending over so whenever I get a new place with a yard, raised raised beds might be considered. Saw some at HD on legs that looked nice but wouldn't trust them past a full year of being useful.
Oh and another Aloe was in bloom and I know for a fact that one is an Aloe vera, took the photo when walking Rocky so didn't get a good shot. Also a little yellow rose was poking its head out from a plant stand in another bed. Cutie pie! No idea what variety it is.
The Aloe is near the garden, you can see the old hose I tossed there that no one has decided to throw away. I know that's an A. vera because of the color of the flower. There's another huge clump further back along the wall almost behind the big jade plant and another Liquidambar tree.
One thing I am realizing about fertilizers is, dry works best when you can work it into the soil before planting. Liquid is better for after plants are in so you don't disturb the soil when they're small. Liquid is also good for when it's warm as it helps water the soil as well. So next time I need fertilizer I'll look into that.
So things on the list now, trellising and stakes for the peas and cage/containment for the potatoes.
