Got out way earlier than yesterday and hopefully on track to get out earlier going forward due to the weather now ramping up for summer.
Firstly the trumpet vine on the gazebo is blooming! Yay for 'Blood Red Trumpet vine' botanically as Distictis buccinatoria. Hoping for more flowers as the hummingbirds absolutely love that type of flower! Also 'someone' (not me) took it upon themselves to also deadhead the roses. Deadheading is okay but these needed a good pruning back in January so whoever is doing it needs to remember how to deadhead as I saw that only the flowers were removed and not far enough down.
Well the other lady (doing to call her Gladys because someone mentioned her name but I forgot) was out in the garden today. The hose was tucked into the aloe and I noticed there was more gopher activity in her first bed. Ruh roh. She had also removed the thoroughly dead tomato plant and tossed it on the compost pile.
Hard to see because the shadow from the pea falls right on it. Oh well, the ground is still rough and yet something decided it was a nice spot to do something. The all shaded area was still damp but there seemed to be two sinkhole type divots, hmmmm. The second picture is after watering the bed thoroughly again which I made sure at the front of the bed to do more vigorously to level the soil. Maybe I should have put some garlic on the surface?
I am pleased to see the transplanted lettuce is finally catching up, well two out of three ain't bad. The up close photos are after watering for better contrast because... light colored lettuce on light colored dirt makes for... not a good picture.
Still waiting for the tomatoes to finish, which at this rate it will be end of the season anyway and have to plan for fall veggies. Nah it'll be done in about a month. I think. That plant is so pathetic and thugly it's an embarrassment. Two small ones at the back are ready but if they're like the other small ones they'll be overripe and too small to do anything with. At least they aren't splitting.
I must say the marigolds are coming along really nice, I expect to see some flowers soon at this rate. I was going to say maybe I'll put some pepper seeds that I collected in the south bed then realized I have about four other pepper plants coming along. A bit overkill and really need to diversify my crops but with such a limited palate I would eat it's hard to find something. The onions 'Gladys' bed are blooming so if she doesn't cut the flowers off or pull them I'm going to sneak some seeds if they get to that point. I thought I had a picture of them but either I deleted it or didn't take one.
But chives I could grow! I could definitely use chives in a lot of things and they do well in part shade and if I'm not mistaken, gophers don't like those either. Too late for actual onions as I've said, those will have to wait until after summer. Oh to have the room for zucchini and flowers, any squash really, maybe will look for a bush cucumber plant.
Possibilities are popping up.
