Another very warm and breezy day. Neither of us slept well last night so we got a late start to the day at least I got my shower first so could do cat walking and watering before we run errands. So only a few pictures today. One of the lizards scurried off to the woodpile as I got to the garden, too fast to take a picture.
Happy Father's day extended to all. I didn't learn so much as gardening from my dad but how to take care of tools, respect for all animals and likely a few other things that I don't remember specifically but have the knowledge. I remember my brothers being able to work out in the yard on the weekend and being the only girl was stuck inside doing 'housework'. I was able to learn names of plants just the same and as I grew up and took landscaping classes understood why he planted things in certain places and what was planted. We lived in an old avocado orchard bordered by native oak trees. So acidic soil that was well amended for the landscaping. It took a few years for us to convince my dad to make a vegetable garden despite deer, rabbits and other critters that would enjoy it. I remember seeing all of the plants coming up and then the only thing that survived was three zucchini plants. Gave us zucchini for weeks. I learned from my parents about landscaping and gardening even though I didn't realize it until much later.
On to the garden, I am actually liking the fertilizer a bit more because it's pellets. It has all the ingredients mixed and when it gets wet it breaks down. The other organics you might get more sulfur in one spot, more alfalfa meal in another.
Hard to tell unless you zoom but the small pale dots and patches are dissolved fertilizer pellets. I am now realizing I should have mixed it in with the soil at the same time but oh well.
Everything was very dry when I got out there so thorough watering was done. Can't also tell there is a slight mound in the middle of the fence bed but it's still there. No excessive puddling anywhere there other than the divots I made around the hill. Some puddling in low spots in the north bed but nothing to worry about. I threw some water on the log pile because lizards need water too.
And am pleased to see that my leveling was spot on for the south bed. The water made a satisfying drum sound on the amended soil because I lightly packed it with the hoe yesterday when all was done. I am very pleased with my efforts and hope to be here when they all start growing and producing.
Oh the mystery plant down in the lower right corner? For all the world it looks like a grape vine. I hope not. Errands to run, we at least got food money now so a hearty lunch and hope for better days.
