The day has started out cool, overcast with a lovely breeze coming through the window and by 10:30 no clouds and clear skies. Slowly edging up in temperatures and predicted to be in the low 90's over the weekend. No bueno. Hopefully this is the last spike before it starts coasting down into more reasonable temperatures.
Last night I decided to take out the tomato on the end that has not given me any good tomatoes. They all had BER and absolutely flummoxed about it. I was just going to leave the stump there until later because it was rooted in there really good. Seriously good roots but then got to thinking it would regrow and then I wouldn't want to dig it up and then have a situation like the last tomato getting diseased and bugs and just ugliness. So out it came (picture on the left is after I added in some of the compost).
Sorry for the blurriness on that picture of the roots. The other thing I realized was I didn't bring a bag down to haul the plant to the trash because I hadn't intended to do that. Well that's what compost buckets are for right?
Okay so one of them actually had compost in it and I went back and forth about it then took it over and dumped almost all of it into the spot where the tomato had been. I could have scraped all of it out but, like a sourdough starter, you need some of the good stuff left over to inoculate the next batch. Yes, there's a lot of unusable tomatoes over there and I picked up the majority of them. Who knows, maybe I'll have another batch of tomatoes growing in the compost soon.
Sadly, I don't know if the strawberries are going to survive. I watered them last night really well and they are staying in the shade so here's hoping. If not, it didn't cost me anything and maybe I can get some starts next spring.
Little cukes are growing! The one in the right side picture is about an inch and a half. They seem to be growing straight and uniform right now, which hopefully continues.
Get 'em while they're young! Still lots of male flowers for the females coming out. Made sure the other one in the vine hanging over the edge got more pollen as well. The flower is slowly fading and the fruit is the longest of all of them. Hopefully won't need a sling for it but I have something that will serve that purpose if it comes down to it.
My happy little garden. I might be able to take those stakes out soon since I reduced the weight of the plant by a third. It still has a few good tomatoes on it so don't really want to yank it just yet. While I was cleaning up the tossed tomatoes I grabbed some of the cilantro seeds and sprinkled them at the back of the west bed where the other tomato had been. Barely covered them with some soil and left them as they were.
That's going to be the greenery bed for the winter anyway. Will toss some carrots and radishes I suspect but root crops will likely go in the raised bed since it has the best soil. Sweet peas on the trellis and then have to figure out what to put there for the spring and next summer. Dang! Keep forgetting about the crate for the potatoes! I have a few wrinkled rooting potatoes in the cupboard right now but where to put the crate!
Still more thinking to do on what goes where and when.
