The hurricane/tropical storm that was predicted to wreak havoc has
bypassed my location entirely. We got some heavy rain and a little wind
but mostly oppressive humidity and warm temperatures. Jon's sinuses were
giving him a headache yesterday morning so that was the first sign of
barometric pressure shifting (he said it was due to the two shots he got the day before that). We had to run the fans to keep air flowing or we'd be
drowning in humidity even worse. It got a bit blustery last night after dark with a little rain but other than that, yeah we're good.
Waterfall in front of our door from the ten minute deluge due to gutters backing up and the water spilling around the downspout. We had no risk of flooding or damaging wind in our neighborhood because it's mostly buildings with a few hills around us.
Meanwhile, back at the garden.
Looks like it did turn into a river for a bit out there which is not surprising really. It did pour down really hard for a a while. This is good though. All of Saturday it was a steady soaking rain, just enough that if you had to walk somewhere you might need an umbrella. That's the good kind of rain that soaks into the soil deeply.
This is the view to the east this morning. About the same kind of clouds that have been here since Friday night. Flat but not as flat as it was before. By next week it'll be hot, in the 80's and 90's again. Enjoy this while it's here.
Leaves and a few branches everywhere, gardeners were out earlier blowing it all into piles. I think the branch may still be there until one of them decides they need to mow.
The roses are done, rain soaked and wind whipped. The only place that needed sandbags was in front of that one apartment where the drain is non existent and forms a puddle/lake.
Cucumber check. Not sure if that one took or not, the flower has folded up rather than wilted. That little tiny one has lots it's flower already so not holding my breath for that one.
Then there's the little bastard pill bugs climbing up and chewing the flowers in the left hand picture. I pulled back more leaves on that repeat photo to show all the other flowers that are coming in behind that one.
Lots and lots of flowers, with warm weather coming back there will be plenty of opportunity for more pollenizing.
Little bastige pillbugs gnawing on my tomatoes. I'm not sure if that hole was made by them or a worm. Kind of betting on a worm and they take advantage of the open hole. The sunflower seems to be forming seeds just fine, the cage and it were leaning over so I fixed that situation and they're okay.
Not like I'll be picking these though. All of those red ones have blossom rot. Non of them bigger than a ping pong ball. I can't pull those bushes yet due to the sunflower and the zinnias which are starting to form flower buds finally. Just in time for the warm weather coming up. I might cut the tomato bushes down and thin them but can't dig them out.
The lettuces and root crops I think will love that bed. Almost brought down some seeds with me for cilantro and lettuce for the raised bed then cancelled those plans. Can't plant much with the cucumber there and the tomatoes that have roots going everywhere. Besides I need to refresh the beds before I plant anything.
That's it for today. Storm, such as it was for us, the garden survived just fine and now we return to your previously scheduled summer weather.
