Grrumble in the garden

Weather is good, same as yesterday, not much else but a big Grrumble in the garden.

Flowers blooming yada yada.... good thing it's early spring lots of bushes flowering, live is moving forward.

Lantana is bounding back nicely and there are more bloom spikes on the watsonia, just not as many as last year right now. Life bounds back, and life is ended suddenly.

::rude words:: Stupid pill bugs and milipedes chopped down the squash plant overnight. I noticed it not looking good and then nudged one of the leaves with my finger. Whole plant totally chewed at the base, found one of those microscopic millipedes and one pill bug that I chucked as hard as I could over the fence. I need some of that Sluggo Plus ASAP.

And more damage on the cauliflower leaves, which is not unexpected and since I'm harvesting the flower part not the leaves, it's not so bad but still don't want it getting too bad. I found what worms I could and rubbed them out.

Where there is death, there is life. A small red rose I had forgotten was there in one of the beds, rootstock variety but still a spot of color. The celery base that I buried in the south shaded bed is breaking the surface!!! Yay! And of course the sweet peas, which we have discovered that large amounts makes my sweetie allergic. He had to sit in the car with the bouquet yesterday and the rest of the day was sneezing. Will have to keep the bunches small.

Difference in leaves is more apparent now on the peppers and tomatillos. Those JalapeƱo peppers definitely have a more pointed seed leaf than the tomatillos so a lot of those plants are going to be given away. I don't know why I took a picture of the chive plant, maybe because it was flowering, who knows at the time it seemed like a good idea.

So, luckily I still had squash seeds and planted them in the old orchid pot, then chose to experiment with the rose seeds I had gathered. I almost planted them immediately then stopped and did a float test on them. About half floated so took five of the ones that sank and planted those. Still about ten seeds more that are good. Rose seeds should have been put in straight vermiculite/perlite soil but doing it anyway in potting soil. If the sprout bonus, if not oh well. Keeping them on the porch rack for a day or two but might move the squash seeds down to full sun in the garden. I almost planted some of the green tomatillo seeds and more tomato, will see what happens with the current crop.

The idea of purple or brown colored salsa 'verde' is not appetizing, which is why I was going to plant some green ones. I think I'll do that anyway because I can plant one of each at least.

No one is going in the big beds until I get some Sluggo Plus!

Well, calamity struck.

I never got out to the garden yesterday because I figured it wasn't worth it. I should have watered because it's been dry of course...
