No further incursions by the gopher but I think the lady doesn't realize her tomato is completely dead and hasn't taken it out yet. I did see some tomato leaves from her other bush on the compost pile so... at least there's that. I also picked three tomatoes that were ready, though small and so far they taste just fine!
So the crack was small enough that I just cut it off with the top part and it was fine. Still waiting on the rest of the tomatoes though and judging from size and color I'll only have two more to harvest in the near future, the rest...will be a bit.
The lettuce transplants are still hanging in there and the three or four growing behind the potatoes are doing fantastic but with the current temperature trend, they may want to bolt a lot sooner than they should.
I decided to flood the bed again yesterday just to make sure the gopher didn't get any ideas The pea is still going strong and so are the carrots.
The picture on the right is the hole left behind as well as some dirt pile from the gopher, hence flooding the bed again. Oh and guess who decided this is a good time to bloom? The small pea in the north bed.
Just can't rely on nature doing what it's supposed to do right? It's so stunted and yet the weather is telling it, 'set flowers make fruit it's too hot to grow!'.
And once again the impatient gardener in me decided to pull some of the carrots..and was disappointed in flavor.
I did pull the smallest ones so not surprising but had hopes they would be good flavor to use in the crockpot chicken I want to cook tonight. Oh well. The first one I bit into had a quick aftertaste of turpentine. The larger one of the bunch had some carrot flavor so I didn't really bother with the rest. I tore the tops off and put them in with the coffee grounds going to the pile tomorrow.
This is the neighbor below us who has a very eclectic collection of garden ornaments and plants. That little red flower in full shade? A miniature rose. She has succulents, tried to grow some milkweed but that didn't work so well, a pothos, just things she had gotten and put there. She also has windchimes and a windbell that make the most wonderful sound when the wind comes through the walkway between the buildings.
The weather is doing well, the hawk nestlings are getting louder and the parents are out looking for food more often with the crows attacking them when they go out or come back. Oh yes and it's May so the Jacaranda's are starting to bloom which means the hummingbirds are seen more often now at the flower branch outside my window.
It's a lovely day in the neighborhood, really it is.
