It's overcast and windy, wonderful cool weather so I actually had to put pants and a heavier shirt on today. Got out a little earlier than my usual time and discovered distressing events in the garden
I gave it a good try at least and now know that I can grow carrots in the ground there. Maybe in the late summer or fall will give it another go in the other bed depending on what's growing there.

Damn gopher got the largest of the carrots I was going to pull today. Also discovered two small mushrooms growing that were shaded by the carrot. Well that's a good thing actually. The remaining ones were still too small to eat so I pulled them anyway and tossed the carrots in the trash (heaven forbid no!) keeping the tops for the compost pile. Forgot the baggie when I went down, stupid gopher has me distracted.
Before pulling the carrots, the pea is looking good, all the beds were still damp enough and with cloud cover half the day I opted not to water.
That purslane and spurge are growing fantastic..weeds, what can I say. I pulled a few of the tops off yesterday to keep them from creeping over the top of the edging. The soil there is rock hard so digging at this point to get them out is not an option. The lettuce I can never get a good picture of but it's doing great as well, perfect growing weather for it.
Due to having to hold the phone and use my thumb to hit the button a lot of the pictures end up slightly blurred due to motion, hence why I need to get a digital camera. The north bed is still doing good, waiting for the last of the tomatoes to turn and discovered flowers... on the tomato.... because...it's stressed.
There were minor signs of the gopher movement again which confirms it likes the area dangnabit. Really tempted to take some of the past prime pre peeled garlic and toss it in holes to surround my beds. Might put some on top to keep the cats out too.
Along with the mushrooms I also dislodged some worms as I was cultivating the bed. That soil is a lot drier looking than it was as the next pictures show. I unfortunately cut at least two others while I was digging but this is excellent to see that there's enough moisture and organic matter for other organisms to show up.
If not for the pea, the entire bed would have been worked over and most likely the gopher would have just moved in.
Will have to definitely use that garlic along all perimeters and deep enough to be noticed. With my luck the dang garlic will start sprouting hahah. Not likely, it's been in the fridge and peeled for a long time not to mention it being a processed kind, not some that I did myself.
Oh and something else discovered when turning the soil is yet another archeological find, a broken bit from a glass bottle. If I can find out a few details I will know approximately when the soil was put in or turned or excavated or whatever.
It's interesting to not that what I can see it says 'Buy Back Bottle' and is 1 pt. It's curved and possibly from a soda bottle. It's clear not green, it's printed instead of being molded and it's got oz/pt measure as well as metric on the right. It's hard to find out what exactly it's from but am assuming it's a soda bottle of some sort. Very interesting and I'm thinking I should have been an archeologist.
