Thought it was going to be just cloudy for the next few days, oops. My bad, it started raining around 1pm yesterday and continued from drizzles to full soft rain all night and into the morning. So no going out to the garden today or walking Rocky. Wet and light wind but that doesn't stop the crows and other birds from flying and calling outside.
I bought the smallest pack of peat pellets at Walmart to do some seeds. Smallest they had was 36 and no sign of the 6 pack greenhouse I've seen before.
Sorry for the blurry picture on the right, that's after I tried to drop some tomato seeds on the center and quite literally needed tweezers. There's a seed in the water and two or three in each pellet. the picture on the right is after the initial pellets were soaked and I dropped in three more. Then realized they weren't expanding completely because they were too tight and pulled out the smaller black container to put those four in.
The other thing I forgot was... no room to put them. I don't have a shelf or anything out of the reach of the cat or anywhere else for that matter so they will be sitting under the kitchen shelf behind the faucet. By the time they're big enough to clear the container I can put them out in the garden. Maybe a bit later so until then have to figure out where I'm going to put them when they get that far.
The rain is more of a heavy mist because the wind is blowing it around very easily. Can barely see the hill in the distance and if there wasn't any wind it would be a steady rain. It feels more like the clouds are just lowered down and getting everything wet. Was going to run to the garden real quick earlier but then the rain got more wet and here I am at the computer now. Hope the lizards are staying as warm as possible in their new home.
It's a wonderful sound though. The background 'shshshshshsing' and occasional louder sound of cars on the main roads nearby, wind blowing through the tree over the fence... it's like everything is muffled by the water. The wonderful wet ground smells though... so rare we get fresh air in the city and in our complex specifically (between smokers, incense and air fresheners blowing in from other apartments) I'm breathing deeply whenever I can. Wish I had a rain coat and hat, I would be out checking the garden or going to a nursery just to look at the plants.
I wonder what this stream looks like these days (Peñasquitos (Creek) Canyon Preserve). It's probably flooded completely of course. It's actually a year round river further downstream. That painting is from a section of the trail for horses to walk through and to the left is the dry foot path.
They don't let anyone on the local trails when it's raining or after for a few weeks due to flooding and mud. But that's the time I want to go see it! That stream and the river have that going on but they don't want people fishing from it because it's usually too shallow but mostly because it's a preserve area.
The rain and snow are doing good for the entire state despite people getting stuck, trapped in their houses for days or weeks. We have needed this rain and snow pack for a decade or more and I guess Mother Nature finally said, 'look you want rain and snow? Here ya go! Don't expect any for another ten years!'.
Oh, I saw a video of the Aussie guy (Self Sufficient Me is his site/farm) using the drum type sifter. It's kind of awkward really because you have to carefully put your shovel in the cylinder and there's not enough room to just turn the shovel sideways and dump out the dirt to sift it. There are larger versions of it of course but he's using a small type that fits over a wheelbarrow. I think using a shaker/rocker sifter would be easier for loading and you can still position a wheelbarrow under it or put it directly over a raised bed to catch the soil/compost you need.
Not quite self-sufficient for me yet.
