Still cloudy weather, staying cool though a bit brighter and warmer than yesterday. Apparently the gardener is following the schedule and was going through the sprinkler stations again. Different guy, possibly the dad of the younger guy that did it last week. Sigh.
But first... cat poop. On top of the potato marker. Good thing I brought my gloves, as it was easier to just scoop it out and toss it to the back of the bed on the other side of the border. Yeesh. Had to rub my glove in the dirt to get rid of the smell afterward on my right glove.
Cilantro is starting to sprout, but so are the spurge seeds that made their way in. Those are the little round leaf ones that I circled in three colors. Easy difference in the cotyledon leaves thankfully.
I found not only that little bugger but a bigger and darker one on the other zinnia. Yeeted them over the wall as soon as I found them. Then saw movement on another leaf and thought it was a fly but, in fact it was a spider. Looks like an ant in the picture but it is indeed, a spider. Too bad it's smaller than the caterpillars.
Then I discovered the molted skin of one of the lizards! If I had a proper way to store it I would have brought it back upstairs, as it was I left it near where I found it. Good size alligator lizard looks like.
Then it was on to the cucumber. There were no buds and no active flowers on that smaller one so I yanked it. Again it had wonderful healthy roots but need that bed cleared before November so I can get some soil in and start planting again.
Smoothed everything out, making sure larger chunks of wood bits were out. Small plant, you made me proud, off to the compost you go. The stem had a really deep channel chewed in it vertically so the pill bugs were a factor in it being smaller I suspect.
I brought both cilantro and the white onion seeds I had collected on my walk to plant. I planted two seeds in each of the pots, will see how that works out. I then looked at the potatoes and decided two of those would be fine in the other bed.
I added bits of bark around and in between things on the surface just as a hopeful deterrent. Might add more this evening when I go check on things.
Follow up on the garden post I made about soil, the mushroom compost the one person got for free is in Escondido, that is a forty-five minute drive and almost a half tank of gas. I am not going to drive that far for two bags of soil. Given better situation and money to spare, not a problem, but then I'd also have my own home and not worry about that sort of thing.
That's basically it for today. Breezy and cool, I even wore my long pants today!
