It's only going to be 84 today but that is already too warm and I suspect it will be warmer than that. As I get older, the hot weather becomes more intolerable. Go figure. A bit breezy but not enough to make a difference and too late in the day to be useful.
Found this visitor yesterday on my way in from my errands. I'm sure she was getting enough to eat with all the flies and butterflies and such that visit the lantana. That swivel head was watching every move I made for sure.
Experiment last night with apple and potatoes under pots... nothing. No sign of nibbles at all. I'm sure they'll be back in no time, like as soon as my seedlings start coming up. The onions are having a hard time recovering. I put some paper towels over them this morning as a sort of sun protection.
Same thing with the cilantro, they got enough sunlight to be good for the day. I then turned my attention to the potato.
The initial burning I saw is actually leafminer damage. Still going to be cautious about watering though. That bed is always staying damp below more than I think. The bark is doing a good job of keeping cats out and shielding the soil.
The rose is getting along with new growth now since the weather is a lot like spring it's responding as it should. I put it in the shade as well for today just as a precaution with the blazing sun out right now. You see the green layer on the soil? That's a sure sign that it was kept too wet for too long. Moss/lichen/algae whatever it is always grows on moist/damp soil that is shaded. The sun is doing the job of invigorating the plant and warming the soil.
I am not that big on miniature roses because they are meant for fast gifts that look nice but honestly are only for looks. No fragrance to speak of, they definitely get bigger than what they are in the pots. I've seen 'real' miniature roses and they can get 2 feet tall and wide. If these last and thrive for me we will see how big they get. I won't be putting them in the ground, no way no how. That window box is going to be their first home. Hopefully.
Oh, a very thoughtful friend is sending me some spare sweetpea seeds yay! Seeds are not that expensive but getting them free is even better. thank you!
The garden group on FB was very responsive to my post about the native plant seeds and some didn't know about the free seeds at the library so I feel good about passing on that info for others.
Cool nights, hot days and it's not even the end of the month yet. Looks like seeds will be going in next month.
