The weather is now back to shorts and shirts and will continue for the next several days. It is very comfortable today so far and is only going to get into the low 70's despite clear skies. Light wind/strong breeze right now which is definitely a tell for the changing weather. Going to be a roller coaster of temperatures with the peak in the 90's over the weekend and then coasting into the low 80's for the following week. The garden was unharmed over night and I got some ideas for protecting the seed beds.
A few late season roses still going. That pink one has been blooming for the past week and the yellow I only noticed the other day. There's a bud on the Tiffany behind the spiky Dracaena in the background of the yellow rose. Yes, they recovered but they didn't have to cut them back so far.
Everything is watered well right now, will do it again tomorrow morning and am hoping to get to storage on Wednesday to look for an old sheet or muslin as well as some of my knitting supplies. That raised bed is so nice and clean and neat, so pretty and promising.
The cilantro is pushing primary leaves now, won't be long before I won't be able to have the chicken wire cover on there but I still have bark and wood to protect the unplanted soil.
And someone put a 1979 version of the Sunset Garden Book on the table, snag! Not that I need it but that is one of the versions I learned plants and their names. The version before that is the one my mom had that was the all green cover with cartoonish small plants on it. Most real gardeners know that you don't throw out old copies of this. Heck, when they were cleaning out a back room at the nursery they discovered one of the first version of it all dusty and spiral bound. It was wonderful.
So an idea someone posted was using umbrellas to protect the seeds, someone else said to just keep them watered and they'll be fine. Ideal soil temperature is between 59 and 85, well if we get sunny days in the 90's I can guarantee that soil is going to be hotter than that. Nothing pushing up on those lettuce seeds still. Wondering if keeping them in the shade and too wet is the issue. Thinking another container of lettuce might be in order after the heat wave. I'll toss that damp soil in the south bed and mix it in, If they suddenly decide to grow, all the better.
I'm not far off from the ideal time to plant all of this, just that most of the time they go by first/last frost date and what we have to look for is first/last heat spike as well.
