Woke to cloudy skies and the smell of wet plants, it was misty/drizzly but it was moisture from the sky. Not enough to wash the car off by a long shot, barely enough to make puddles enough to dribble down the rain gutters. Not going to get out of the high 60's today which is wonderful, just wish I could be sure this sort of weather would continue for another month. I actually have long pants on today.
The soil looks wet but only bout a 1/4 inch down if that. I moved one of the cups and there was a dry layer just under the surface. of course the lettuce trays being out in the open were only near the wall for shade, not rain protection so those got more wet. They'll survive and this weather should help all of them.
The sun has been working it's magic on the little rose. The leaves are doubled in size now and spreading out. Yay! My green thumb is still working! Or maybe the rose is responding to the care and sunlight it desperately needed? That one branch going off to the left needs to be trimmed back to be more balanced though. Forgot my clippers to take care of that today.
Just noticed last night that the other potato is finally breaking the surface. The other potato I am thinking isn't doing so well given that most of the original tuber likely below the chicken wire bed. I am hoping that some will develop in the soil above that. The plant itself is rather puny and not at all strong so not holding out for any bumper crop right now from that plant.
I realized there was enough of an opening for a small cat to get under the wire covering and leaned some pieces of bark to make a barrier. Since it's been open like that for a few weeks, it was likely an unnecessary precaution.
Cool weather is still good because it helps other plants to trigger into fall mode. Leaves are falling from the liquidambar but nothing from the sycamores yet, those fall much later. I almost brought down the carrot and more onion seeds to put in the raised bed but need to look at the weather prognostication for the next few weeks to be sure.
Technically crop rotation says not to put anything in the nightshade family where another grew the previous season. Well.... technically that potato was there before the tomato if I remember. Also I added a lot of new soil to the raised bed so, that's not really the same soil either so I could put potatoes in there. I am more fond of potatoes than carrots and radishes for sure.
Rooting around ideas for how and what to plant next....haha.
