Sort of. Since it got warm yesterday it didn't really get that cold last night. It is comfortable today and will be in the mid to high 70's. High hazy clouds are moving in because by Wednesday we're supposed to have rain. So this is the leading edge of the storm front coming in.
From yesterday 'the collection' of pots still in the middle of the bed. I have been slightly worried about the way the romaine are kind of leggy and realized it was because the pellets are lower than the edge of the container so they're trying to reach for the sun. The lettuces are not growing much recently so I might start thinning them with tweezers. And still need to get some fertilzer.
I decided to dig the south bed again as I had dumped some larger bits of the bed soil on it which was like two gallons of water in a pool in other words, not worth anything. As I was digging I discovered more roots that were still very actively growing and can only assume they are from the tomatoes that were there. It is still very much clay soil. Cold and dry but holds together when I make a fist. It needs the same volume in organic matter to really make a good bed.
Very dust like almost moon grade soil. And because I still don't trust the local feral wildlife I covered it again. Nice loose soil is prime pooping ground. I watered it really good this morning just to keep whatever microbes active in there. And to make it look like I have planted something.
Carrots and cilantro are coming up just fine as well as one lone onion in the west bed. The zinnias are starting to look a bit weathered so those may be coming out soon.
Meanwhile.... the peas are taking off. Sort of glad only two of the snow peas came up, not a big pea fan and these are the edible pod type and I don't fix that much asian foods as yet. Good cover crop as they say.
Carrots still going strong and the cilantro is somehow doing good despite being shaded by the back potato. (Still kind of giddy about how many potatoes I have planted and are growing.)
I took the romaines out of the container and thinned them down to one in each pellet, from 11 to 4. Plus the other two in the west bed, that is more than enough romaine combined with the other lettuces.
Then I noticed, another potato has broken the surface. When I tried to move some soil away I realized it was really close to the surface so I just covered it up a little more. This is why I am so giddy about the potatoes. I am going to be just overflowing with potatoes in the spring. Couldn't be happier with that particular crop. Tomatoes, yah they're good to have and I had a bumper crop this year but haven't had as much success with potatoes. Happy happy joy joy!
Next accomplishment will be bulb onions.
And on the sour gardening note. I wish this lady would leave the lantana alone! She just trimmed four or five big branches off it to make room for her 'display' area behind it. Honestly. Oh yeah and the other lady cannot for the life of her keep anything growin in that one spot on the left. She puts it in, it finishes flowering and she changes it out for something else. She even put a spider plant in there and it was doing good but I guess she got too impatient and pulled it out. Sigh. That lantana was a thriving beautiful bush three years ago.Oh well.
My Christmas will be good, nothing extravagant but I will have food and a place to live. That is richer than others I have seen. It is yet to be seen whether my power gets cut off tomorrow but I hope not.
