Almost didn't post because it was such a boring day. Weather was more partly cloudy today so some sun broke through and warmed things up a bit. Earlier in the day it was cloudier so some of the pictures are sunny and others not.
What a difference direction makes. The picture on the left is roughly South West, the other is north east. My usual sweetgum tree I get a picture of for cloud reference.
Beautiful skies in that direction and then I turned around and saw how dark the clouds were and had to get a picture of those for contrast.
Accidentally took a picture of the carrot tops when I was trying to move them out of the way to see the lettuces. They are pretty leaves though and the lettuces are just taking off now so going to keep repeating that this is the time of year to plant lettuce, carrots and potatoes not winter.
Almost wanted to cut some chives but at the time I didn't have a recipe for them. Now I'm cooking some potatoes and it says to sprinkle chives on top when they're done. Oh well. Full dark outside, not going to go out there with a flashlight and scissors just for some chives. I have no idea what that seedling is, might be cilantro, might be a weed, will find out in another week when it gets mature leaves.
That west bed is looking pretty dang professional. Other than the silly gopher proofing I had to do. The carrots are still very deep in the ground when I moved some soil away to check, and they're also still very pale. I did pull a small one to make more room for a larger one.
Fingertip to elbow on my is about 18 inches. So more tops than carrot on that one which is a sure sign of not properly balanced soil. That size carrot should have tops half that size, the color is okay sort of but it is also showing signs of irregular growth and that could be from being so close to another one.
The oregano is looking pretty beat up and so is the rose. Really need to get them out of those pots and into something bigger. Will have to see if I can catch Dolores and ask to use one of her pots and compost. The jade is slowly winding down, a bee wandered by and checked out the pea flowers but apparently didn't see anything she could use.
Snails are having fun chewing on that potato in the jade plant. I cleared leaves and stuff away from the base and there's the spudling that sprouted on the surface and one other long, leggy stem. Going to just let that grow however long and then see about digging around in there.
I did move some soil away from the potato in the bed and there is one yellow spud but not very big so that one will stay put. Come to think of it, I just remembered the one that's growing in the back corner of the raised bed, have to see what that's doing now that the carrots are tall enough to shade it.
It's only been a few days since I planted the tomato and pepper seeds. I covered them with a clear plastic container with holes in it like the one I'm using and the big winds we had two days ago blew it away before I could anchor it. Dangit. Those are containers from the strawberries we got last summer. Will have to see if I can find some more because they make great seedling containers and even greenhouse lids. It's still rather chilly at night and there's a lot of people that are starting their seeds inside, I don't have the room for that so they have to make do with hardening off while they grow. I didn't have much luck with the peppers last time so not expecting much this time either.
Sure I could spend about four or five dollars and get a six pack of tomatoes or peppers but where's the fun in that when I already have seeds?
